MAHARASHTRA

  • Girl power makes Maharashtra’s college enrolment better than national average

  • Undergraduate (UG) and postgraduate (PG) programmes in Maharashtra have seen a 16.5% and 6.5% enrolment growth in the last five years—better than the corresponding national rates of 10% and 5% in the same period. But when it comes to enrolment in PhD programmes, data from the latest All-India Survey of Higher Education (AISHE) presents a sorry picture for Maharashtra. Research is getting renewed impetus in public universities, but in the state, PhD enrolment has seen only a marginal growth of 2% in the last five years, when nationally it has grown by almost 45%.

  • While in 2014-15, 28.78 lakh students enrolled in UG courses across the state, in 2018-19, the number rose to 33.52 lakh (see box). During this period, admission to PG programmes increased from 4.33 lakh to 4.61 lakh. The growth in PG enrolment can be largely attributed to a surge in the number of girls pursing education at the masters’ level. Twenty-five percent more girls are enrolled in PG programmes in the state, as compared to 2014-15. Boys’ enrolment, in contrast, has seen almost a 10% drop.

  • Affordable education, infrastructure, CSR (corporate social responsibility) activities, and affirmative action by the state government are some of the reasons for the positive shift
