- Govt panel set to study traffic, parking woes
- The state government on Wednesday informed the Bombay high court (HC) that it will appoint a nine-member committee of senior bureaucrats to look into all the issues related to scarcity of parking space and traffic congestion in the city.
- The committee will comprise senior officials from the traffic police, transport department, Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMDRA), Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MMRCL), BEST undertaking along with an official nominated by the Centre.
- According to statistics earlier tendered before the HC, the number of vehicles on roads in Mumbai everyday had gone up by 28.95 % between 2007 and 2011 — from 15,03,445 in 2007 to 19,38,661 in 2011. During the same period, the number of vehicles on roads in Thane increased by 35.26 % — from 10,25,594 to 13,87,236.
