MAHARASHTRA

  • Maharashtra loses 10% cattle in seven years: Livestock census

  • Despite a ban on cow slaughter and laws to protect them introduced four years ago,the state has lost more than 10% cattle (cows, bullocks, and calves), according to a figure of the 20th livestock census 2019.
  • Maharashtra is the second in top ten states of the country to record such a sharp decline in number of cow family. Interestingly, the cow count has seen a growth of 18% nationally.

  • The state-wise cattle population chart shows Maharashtra used to have 1.55 crore of family of cows, in 2012 whch has gone down to 1.39 crore (10.7%) at present. Maharashtra is the biggest loser in the cow family count after Odisha that recorded a decrease of 15.01% of cow family. Odisha may have lost more bovine family in the terms of percentage, but loss of Maharashtra is higher in absolute number. The state lost 16 lakh bovine cattleheads in the last six years compared to 15 lakh in Odisha.

  • Decreasing population can be linked with the drought situation in the state. Between 2012 to 2019, the state faced drought-like situation in at least four years. Many owners sold off their cattle in neighbouring states as it became difficult to feed them. Several may have died due to starvation.

  • According to official figure posted on National Dairy Development Board website, Maharashtra’s milk production has grown from 8,469 tonnes to 11,102 tonnes in from 2012 to 2018.
