- Maharashtra draws up Rs 8,500 DBT plan to keep children of migrant workers in school
- Recognizing the potential threat of dropout cases, which peaks during droughts, the primary school education department has come up with a series of measures to keep children in schools. Apart from the usual measures, the state government is also trying something new this time. It plans on transferring Rs 8,500 directly into the beneficiary bank account to incentivize the children of migrant workers to stay in school.
- The pilot project, under the Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan, is being implemented in the Shirur block of Beed taluka. The money is for a duration of 6 months and is supposed to ensure that students, who are forced to migrate with their parents, continue their education even in the new city/town. The money is in place of the morning and evening snacks the children would have got at school had they stayed back in their native villages. If the project succeeds in Shirur, it will be scaled up and implemented across the state for the 2019-20 academic year.
- In Maharashtra, there are some districts from where seasonal migration of sugar cane harvesters takes place every year. Through the Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan, breakfast and evening snacks are provided to the school students. This gives the parents another incentive to allow their children to stay back in their native villages
