  • Maharashtra govt to ‘verify’ historical sites and restrict construction

  • After losing historic monuments to developmental projects and encroachments, the state government has launched a drive to physically verify the situation at these sites, and mark out controlled areas or buffers around them to restrict constructions. This drive has been launched from Marathwada, where major lacunae in the list of protected monuments—which were notified in the times of the Nizam of Hyderabad—had come to light.
  • The number of monuments in Marathwada fluctuated in the records of the directorate, after which this lacunae came to light. The official admitted that there was a chance that around six to seven monuments may have been lost or destroyed. This includes a Mesolithic-era site at Shendra near Aurangabad.
  • The directorate is also working on amendments to the Maharashtra Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act, 1960, to create statutory buffer zones around these areas.
